Sunday 18th March was an exciting day for Mark Leaman. It was his very first patrol with Kurrawa Surf Club after recently completing his Bronze Medallion - the final hurdle before becoming an official life saver.
Mark wasn't rostered to patrol that day, but a shortage in afternoon life savers at Kurrawa beach saw him making his way down to the sand for the first time wearing the red and yellow.
A little into the afternoon, Mark noticed some swimmers struggling against the current as they tried to cross the gutter to the outer bank. He grabbed a tube and headed out to keep a closer eye on them, just in case.
It was a lucky decision, for as soon as Mark arrived on the scene, a young female swimmer had gotten into trouble and needed immediate assistance. Without further ado, Mark hooked the tube around the girl and towed her safely back to shore.
Not a bad effort for a first patrol!
